Dr. S. Leela, a shrewd academician and administrator, hails from an agriculture family. She completed her B.A and M.A in English at Vellalar College for Women, Erode, M.Phil at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli and Ph.D from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. She started her career as a Lecturer in Kongu Arts and Science College, Erode in 1996 and was promoted as Head of the Department in 2003 for her flexible and friendly leadership traits. She has rich experience in both academic and administration. Passion for learning is her greatest asset and that has made her a committed researcher. She has produced 17 M.Phils and is guiding 4 Ph.D Scholars.
She is skillful, organized and possesses effective leadership skills. She has served in various portfolios taking up responsibilities as Convenor (NAAC), President (Women Development Cell), Member (IQAC and Curriculum Development Committee) contributing towards institution building. Her achievements made her a familiar figure among the academicians of Bharathiar University. Her stint as Chair Person, Board of Studies in Bharathiar University saw sweeping reforms in curriculum. She also served as a Member in the Standing Committee of Academic Affairs and Inspection Commission for grant of Affiliation to New Courses.
Some of her roles worth mentioning are : She was the Coordinator for Bharath Nirman Public Information Campaign organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India to create awareness among the Public. She was the Coordinator of Unite for Sight organized by Unite for Sight, Inc. USA towards eye care and eye health education. She coordinated Police-Public Sports Festival organized by West Zone Police, Coimbatore to promote Police-Public relationship. Along with the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority Chennai, she organized Sports for rural children.
Simplicity being her defining quality, she received the Indira Gandhi Women Achievers Award in 2010, State Level Best NSS Programme Officer Award in 2008 and a Special Award under Total Sanitation Scheme by DRDA, Erode. She had served as District Chairperson, Women Empowerment, Rotary International District-3202. Her administrative achievements saw His Excellency, The Governor of Tamil Nadu nominate her as a Member of Senate of The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.
