Periyar University Minority Cell



Introduction
      Minority Cell of the University was established in 2019 with the purpose of empowering the minority communities in the University. “Every student has a right of education” and by following this fact, our University is very much keen to provide services to the educational and cultural needs of the Minority community along with other caste, creed and Nationality. The Minority Cell basically helps minority students including Christian, Muslim, Jain, Buddhists etc. for their academic development.


Vision
     To create an inclusive and equitable academic environment where minority students feel empowered, supported, and valued, enabling them to achieve their full potential and contribute to the social, cultural, and economic growth of society. The Minority Cell envisions a campus that celebrates diversity, promotes equal opportunity, and nurtures the holistic development of all students, particularly those from minority communities.

Mission
    1. Promote Equal Access to Education:
    Ensure equal opportunities for minority students in admissions, scholarships, and academic resources, helping them overcome barriers to education.

    2. Support with Scholarships and Financial Aid:
    Facilitate awareness and access to various government and private scholarships, fellowships, and financial aid programs, helping minority students secure necessary funding for their education.

    3. Create a Safe and Inclusive Environment:
    Develop a campus culture where minority students feel safe, respected, and supported in their academic, social, and personal endeavors.

    4. Empowerment through Skill Development:
    Organize career counseling, skill development workshops, and mentoring programs that guide minority students in making informed career choices and developing professional competencies.

    5. Ensure Constitutional Rights and Reservations:
    Protect and uphold the rights of minority students by ensuring their access to reservations and other constitutional provisions in admissions, scholarships, and other educational benefits.

    6. Provide Emotional and Psychological Support:
    Offer counseling and support services to address the emotional and mental well-being of minority students, ensuring they have the necessary resources to cope with challenges and thrive.

    7. Create Awareness about Legal Rights and Welfare Schemes:
    Educate minority students about their legal rights, available welfare schemes, and avenues for redressal in case of discrimination or unfair treatment.

    8. Promote Community and Cultural Integration:
    Foster intercultural understanding and unity by promoting events, discussions, and activities that celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and identities of minority communities on campus.


Objectives
  • To provide equal opportunity for education of minorities.
  • To create awareness among the minority students regarding various scholarships program of State Government and UGC.
  • To facilitate financial support to students from minority communities from governmental agencies and other sources.
  • To take follow up measures for achieving the objectives and targets laid down for the purpose by the Government of India and the UGC.
  • To ensure provisions for an environment where all such students feel safe and secure.
  • To encourage participation for career orientation programs which would empower and equip them with the necessary skills to choose a career options.
  • To provide prompt counseling for any emotional emergencies arising on account of any event at the campus.
  • To ensure protection and reservation as provided in the constitution of India.


Nature of Activities of the Cell
  • Collection of reports and information of State Government and UGC orders on various aspects of education, employment of minority students.
  • Circulate State Government and UGC’s decisions about different scholarship programs.
  • Communicate with the students and motivate them for better future planning.
  • The Cell is committed to provide assistance to the minority students through counseling, personality development, development of communication skill and preparatory classes for professional and employment purposes etc.
  • The Cell is actively engaged in coordinating and resolving the problems in the matter of conduct of coaching and other measures with a view to see that the education system succeeds in bringing to a level quantitatively as well as qualitatively indistinguishable from the level of the rest of the society.


Composition of Minority Cell
     The Minority Cell Committee shall be constituted by the President for a period of three years consisting of convener, two members from teaching staff and one member from non-teaching staff, one of whom will be from minority class.
