About

• The Centre for Biodiversity and Forest Studies is the Unique centre started in the year 2011,Funded by Periyar University.
• Our Centre is establishing the Biodiversity Park in the Periyar University Campus very successfully.
• The Garden encompasses a number of rare and endangered flora, ornamental and medicinal plant species and Fossil Park which have been conserved.
• Biodiversity museum covers the Specimens of rare and endangered species (Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperm and Angiosperm).

Objectives

• To create the Green belt around Salem and Dharmapuri Districts.
• To increase the afforestation action near village areas.
• Identifying the Flora and Fauna, Classifying the Endangered Species.
• Organizing awareness programmes to rural people and having collaborative work with local NGOs.

Vision

• Conservation of Biodiversity and Forest ecosystem in the way of sustainable utilization

Mission

• To create awareness about significance of biodiversity from school childrens to local communities
• To establish Biodiversity Park in the University campus where maintain rare and endangered species through ex-situ conservation
• To establish medicinal plant garden

Green House

• 30 different medicinal plants (Tinosporacardifolia, Erythrinaindica, Adathodazeylanica, Achyranthusaspera, Catharanthusroseus, Pergulariadaemia, Cardiospermumhelicacabumetc) maintained at established Green house

Biodiversity Garden

• Contains 25 different traditional species of trees (Dalbergiasissoo, Dalbergialatifolia, Bauhinia erythrina, Bauhinia variegate etc)
• 10 different horticultural crops (Pomegranite, Guava, Sapota, Mango, Amlaetc)
• Kept some Tree fossils which are collected from Thiruvakkarai, Cuddalore District
• Collected and deposited 40 different tribal seeds through field studies
• More than 35 seaweed herbarium from different coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry and Goa.
