Periyar university, Salem (Tamil Nadu) was established in the year 1997 in memory of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, the rationalist and social reformer in the country. The University established by an Act of Tamil Nadu State Legislature (Act No.45-97), as per provision of Periyar University Act, 1997. The University obtained 12(B) and 2(f) status from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and it was reaccredited by the NAAC with “A++” Grade in 2021. The University got 59th position in NIRF rank. The Periyar University Centre for Online and Distance Education (formerly referred as Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE)) was established in the year 2001 to serve the student community and offer Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Certificate programmes through Open and Distance (ODL) mode of education.
