ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Eighteen Departments of studies and research are actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities.  With the limited infrastructural facilities faculty members of the various Departments have published more than 600 research papers in the reputed National and International journals, Faculty Members have also participated in many National and International Conferences/Seminars and presented their papers and also delivered keynote address/invited talks.

The Departments have also organised many National Conferences and few International Conferences sponsored by various funding agencies on thrust areas and vital topics.  Eminent Scholars from reputed Universities in India and abroad delivered talks in these conferences.

Major research projects for the tune of Rs.10 Crores in 2010-2011 sponsored by UGC, DST, DRDO, CSIR, DBT, RSSDI, TNSCST, etc. are undertaken by the faculty members of the various Departments.  Numerous fellowships has been received by our research scholars from CSIR, Jawaharlal Nehru Research Foundation, DST / INSPIRE Programme, UGC Rajiv Gandhi Scheme etc.

FELLOWSHIPS/AWARDS

76th Science congress endowment eminent scientist award in Natural Sciences was given to Prof. Dr. K. Muthuchelian in 2010. Merit of excellence award in the field of Medicinal Plant Sciences was given to Prof. Dr. K. Muthuchelian by Sri Venkateswara Univerity, Tirupati in 2010.

Dr. P. Mathaiyan, Head, Department of Tamil has been awarded for his book “Theory of Love concept and Tradition of Love poetry of Tamil” the best book award by the Government of Tamil nadu for the year 2009.

Prof.K. Thangavel, Head, Department of Computer Science has been awarded Tamil Nadu Scientist Award [TANSA] in 2010.

Dr.V. Krishnakumar, Head, Department of Physics has been nominated as visiting professor by Jan Dlugosz University, Czestochowo, Poland for the academic year 2010-2011.

Visiting Fellowship was awarded to Dr.C. Selvaraj, Head, Department of Mathematics, to carryout research in Nankai University and Beijing Normal University, China.

Dr.Mu. Ramkumar, Department of Geology has availed Humboldt Fellowship to visit Germany and the Humboldt foundation has sanctioned Rs.35 lakhs to organise International Conference on Earth resources for future sustenance.

Dr.L. Kavitha, Department of Physics was awarded Junior Associateship by ICTP, Italy and BRNS - Young Scientist Research Award (2010).

Research project on solid waste managment - inter disciplinary approach was undertaken by Dr. A. Elangovan, HOD of Commerce.  The outcome of project is projected in a documentary film before the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

Periyar Institute of Management Studies has signed an MoU-Memorandum of Understanding with Global Institute of Foreign Trade, Madurai.  This will help the management students to explore various opportunities related to foreign trade. This will also enhance the Industry-Institute Collaboration.

Department of Physics has initiated steps to reach an MoU with Silicon Ventures, United Kingdom to setup a technical excellence centre.  This will enable the Department to train the students in Micro Electronics.

PATENTS

Dr.R. Balagurunathan, Department of Microbiology has filed a patent for the research on Anti Tuberculosis and HIV antibiotic. Probably, this is first of its kind in antibiotics which is effective against both TB and HIV. Patent No : 247/DEL/2011 date 2.2.2011.

Dr.P. Indra Arulselvi of Department of Bio-technology has been granted patent for her research on Insecticidal  activity by the Chimeric BTG.  Patent No. IN24427. Date: 10.12.2010, Journal No.: 50/2010.

ABROAD VISIT

Dr.R. Rajavel, Department of Chemistry has received travel grant from Asian Biological Inorganic Chemistry Society to attend conference at Taiwan and presented a paper during 1-5 November 2010.
Dr.K. Nachimuthu, Department of Education, visited Thailand to attend an International Conference on e-learning for knowledge based society organized by Assumption University, Bangkok in December 2010.
Dr.P. Nazni, Department of Food Sciences, visited Czechoslovikia to present a research paper in the 10th International Nutrition and Diagnostics Conference held in September 2010 at Prague, Czech Republic.
Dr.R. Subramani, Department of Journalism and Mass Communications has visited Malaysia to present a paper in 7th International Language for specific purposes Seminar on Globalisation of New Literacies organized by University Technology, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 2010.
Dr.G. Velraj, Department of Physics has visited Malaysia between 7th and 9th May 2010 to attend the International Conference on Applied Physics and Mathematics (ICAPM-2010) organised by IACS IT, Malaysia.
Dr.L. Kavitha, Department of Physics has visited the University of Aveiro, Portugal and Spain during 19-23 June, 2010 for establishing research collaboration and as an invited speaker.  She has also visited the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia during 02-03 July, 2010 for establishing research collaboration.
Dr.P. Venkatachalam has visited USA to present a research paper in American Society for plant Biologists.  Conference-Western union meeting held at California State University, Long Beach, California, USA in February 2011.
Dr.E.K. Girija, Department of Physics, visited United States to attend the 35th International Conference & Exposition on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, held from 23 to 28 January 2011.
Dr.R. Parimalavalli and Mrs.S. Thilagavathi, Department of Food Sciences attended an International Conference on Global Environment and its sustainability: implications and strategies held at Bangkok, Thailand from 25th to 29th November 2010.
